How To Rent A Car For The First Time In Malaysia

24 June 2026 7 min read

Documents, deposits, insurance, and the small details tourists often miss - a straight answer guide for first-time renters in KL.

Renting a car in Kuala Lumpur is straightforward once you know what suppliers actually check. This is the short version we send to first-time visitors before they land at KLIA.

What You Need To Bring

A passport, a valid driving licence from your home country (an International Driving Permit is recommended for non-Latin scripts), and a credit or debit card for the security deposit. Minimum age at DRIVE KL is 21 for standard vehicles and 25 for the premium and sports fleet.

Security Deposit And Payment

Deposits at DRIVE KL start from RM 300 and scale with the vehicle. It is refunded on return once the car has been inspected. Rental fees can be paid by bank transfer, card, or in cash on collection.

Insurance And Excess

Every rental includes standard comprehensive cover. Understand your excess before you sign - it is the maximum you would pay in the event of an at-fault claim. If you are new to left-hand driving or Malaysian traffic, ask about a reduced-excess add-on.

Tolls, Petrol And Parking

Malaysian highways use the Touch n Go eWallet and RFID system. Most of our cars come with a Touch n Go card ready to top up. Return the car with the same fuel level you collected it - photos are taken at handover so there are no surprises.
